The Cambridge O Level Islamiyat (2058) course offers a comprehensive understanding of Islamic beliefs, practices, and history. It aims to develop a deep appreciation of Islam’s spiritual and moral teachings and how they apply to contemporary life. The syllabus is divided into five main areas:
- Major Themes of the Qur’an – Students study selected Surahs (such as Surah Al-Fatiha, Al-Baqarah, and Al-Anfal) to explore key themes including God’s nature, moral guidance, and the role of messengers. These passages are analyzed for both content and context.
- The Life and Importance of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) – This includes key events from the Prophet’s life in Makkah and Madinah, highlighting his role as a model for Muslims. Students learn how his actions and leadership influenced early Islamic society.
- The First Islamic Community – The lives of the Rightly Guided Caliphs (Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali) are examined. Their contributions to the development of Islam, governance, and justice are emphasized.
- Major Teachings of the Hadiths of the Prophet (PBUH) – A set of selected Hadiths is studied to understand Islamic values such as honesty, justice, mercy, and self-discipline.
- The History and Importance of the Qur’an – Topics include the revelation process, preservation of the Qur’an, and its authority in Islamic life.
Assessment includes two papers:
- Paper 1 – 75 marks
- Paper 2 – 75 marks
The syllabus encourages thoughtful reflection, contextual understanding, and application of Islamic principles to modern-day issues. It promotes both academic learning and spiritual development.
